Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is New Zealand's largest school with a roll of up to 24,000 ākonga (students) at any point of time. We provide personalised and authentic learning programmes through distance education from early childhood to NCEA Level 3, including to young adult and adult learners.
Our vision is to enable our ākonga to achieve their educational and personal goals, empowering them to become engaged and contributing members of their communities.

Teaching at Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu
Kaiako at Te Kura engage with our ākonga online and face-to-face at huinga ako (advisories) and events, and also work onsite with colleagues in our regional offices. Te Kura aims to provide flexible working arrangements, so Kaiako are able to request to work from home for up to two days per week.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this position:
We have a vacancy for a Kaiako in the Ngā Kete o Te Ao Māori rōpū. The successful applicant will be part of a collaborative team guiding and supporting innovative and inclusive curriculum design across a range of mātauranga Māori contexts for learning.
In particular we are seeking expertise in teaching and assessing Te Reo Māori up to and including NCEA Level 3, and expertise in a range of the sub-fields of Field Māori. Experience in teaching and assessing Te Ao Haka is desirable but not essential. The role is responsible for learning design that connects to ākonga interests, promotes connection with local hapori, hapū and iwi, and champions Te Ao Māori and mātauranga Māori. The role provides learning leadership to kaiako across the school from Year 7-15.
Our focus is on engaging ākonga in learning that is relevant to them in their context and provides choices for the future. We are looking for a Kaiako who is passionate about supporting ākonga in culturally responsive contexts to further develop ways of knowing, being and doing that are steeped in Te Ao Māori, who is innovative, creative and responsive to the needs of individuals and groups of ākonga when designing learning, and who is excited at the opportunity to work in an environment where learning is highly personalised and flexible.

You are interested in authentic learning; you model current pedagogy and are always coming up with new ideas. You're enthusiastic, collaborative, understand the key competencies of the New Zealand curriculum assessment practice and are committed to improving education outcomes for students.
The successful applicant will have:
- compentecy in Te Reo is a must
- experience in providing opportunities for ākonga to engage in Māori culture, language and traditional practice
- experience in communicating culture, tikanga, and knowledge systems through connections with past, present and future
- practical experience in effective assessment for learning
- up-to-date curriculum knowledge, including national curriculum refresh and Review of Achievement Standards
