Te Aho o Te Kura Pounamu (Te Kura) is Aotearoa New Zealand's largest state-funded school, supporting up to 28,000 ākonga at any one time through personalised, flexible learning programmes. Our ākonga are at the centre of everything we do.
We are seeking a Kaiāwhina Whānau (fixed-term) to join our Literacy and Numeracy Intervention team within the Whānau Centric Workstream of Te Kura's Acceleration Plan. This role supports the design and trial of whānau-centred literacy and numeracy approaches by working directly alongside whānau, empowering them to actively engage in and positively influence the learning journey of their tamariki.
Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this position
As a Kaiāwhina Whānau, you will:
- Build strong, trusting relationships with whānau to support them in feeling confident, valued, and able to engage meaningfully in their child's literacy and numeracy learning. You'll mentor and guide whānau to understand their child's learning goals and plans while helping them develop their own skills and confidence.
- Support whānau to navigate Te Kura systems and digital learning platforms, using a range of communication methods to ensure engagement, participation, and positive learning outcomes.
- Work in culturally responsive ways, honouring the identity, language, and culture of all whānau and strengthening community connections to enhance outcomes for tamariki.
Travel: This role involves travel to whānau homes, function rooms, community settings, and marae, so a willingness to travel is required.

You'll thrive in this role if you bring excellent interpersonal and listening skills, strong literacy and numeracy ability, and a genuine interest in helping whānau feel confident and supported. You are culturally aware, responsive, and able to work with a range of whānau to understand their strengths and needs. You are confident using digital tools and willing to support whānau to do the same, and you approach challenges with sound judgement, initiative, and practical problem-solving skills.
Preferred (but not essential): Knowledge and experience in Tikanga and Te Reo Māori, Current First Aid certification, or a full NZ driver's licence.

For this position, we offer a salary range starting from $61,412 to a maximum of $74,569 pro rata per annum. The final salary offer will be determined based on the candidate's unique combination of skills, qualifications, and relevant experience.
