Ākonga at Te Kura choose subjects based on their passions and interests, accessing learning online supported by kaiako who guide, inspire, and drive engagement. Alongside this, kaiako provide pastoral care and connect with ākonga through regular huinga ako — online or face to face — where learners connect, receive guidance, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Te Aka Taumatua is the team that leads our bilingual te reo Māori provision for full-time, and dual registered ākonga at Te Kura. Te Aka Taumatua is focussed on its role in the revitalisation of te reo Māori, to offer comprehensive options grounded in mātauranga Māori for ākonga and their whānau.

Te Aka Taumatua is a vine system that wraps around rākau. The vines carry the knowledge and wisdom of our people. It is a place that protects, nurtures and gives room to grow. One can come to seek shelter and safety and can then leave to go.

We have an exciting opportunity for Kaiako (teachers) keen to contribute by bringing their passion for ākonga engagement, high level of relationship management skills, collaborative leadership approach, and experience and expertise in responding to ākonga wellbeing, as a Kaiārahi Toiroa.  This fulltime role incorporates 0.5 FTE (20 hours) leadership and 0.5 FTE (20 hours) teaching. 

As Kaiārahi Toiora you will be part of the regional leadership team, reporting to the Te Aka Taumatua National Manager. You will have your own team of regional kaimahi including kaiāwhina, non-teaching staff who work closely with ākonga to support engagement and wellbeing. You will work collaboratively with other regional leaders and closely with the other Kaiārahi Toiora to develop and strengthen wellbeing practice and system developments nationally.  

This role has a particular emphasis on mentoring and developing the confidence and capability of all kaimahi in the region to respond to ākonga engagement and wellbeing issues. You'll have regional oversight and focus on initiatives and funding to support ākonga in at-risk gateways, delivery of Te Ara Pounamu (our local Big Picture curriculum), Hauora (wellbeing of ākonga and whānau), and Māori and Pacific ākonga wellbeing and engagement. 

Ko koe tēnei | About you

You will bring:

• A New Zealand teacher registration and a current practising certificate
• Strong proficiency in Te Ao Māori, fluency with Te Reo Māori
• Strong knowledge of the Te Reo Māori & Kaupapa Māori curriculum and assessment practices
• A calm, inclusive, and supportive approach to teaching and pastoral care
• Confidence using digital tools to connect with learners
• Enthusiasm for collaborative, values driven teaching
• A genuine interest in learning and embracing Te Reo Māori, with a commitment to growing your skills
• Proven or developing leadership experience 
• Exceptional relationship management and collaboration skills 
• Confidence and capability in working with Māori and Pacific ākonga, whānau and communities 
• Experience and expertise in supporting ākonga and whānau Hauora (wellbeing) 
• Expertise in understanding the value and use of data to inform next steps in supporting ākonga wellbeing and engagement
